Early Life and EducationBorn Eli Parish on February 28, 1808, in Teignmouth, Devonshire, England, Alvars was the second of ten children.
His father, an organist, vocalist, and bookseller, introduced him to music at an early age. He gave his first concert at age ten in 1818 and began formal harp lessons in 1820 under the renowned virtuoso Nicolas Bochsa.
Disappointment and Triumph
Despite his talent, Alvars failed to gain admission to the Royal Academy of Music.
